Our apartment at Porto is located in Rua da Natária. Porto, by the river Douro is the city which named the famous wine. It is a wonderful place to discover, and the perfect start point to explore the north of Portugal. It is a must for sightseeing, perfect for shopping (textiles, shoes and all kind of goods) and charming for nightlife. The apartment is located in Paranhos (more precisely in Carvalhido) one of the oldest places in Porto city. In the XVI and XVII centuries the parishes started their demarcation surrounding the churches. These were built together or by the richest people and were called “Villas” or “Aldeyas”. The same proceeding happened in Paranhos, first called “Paramus”. This area was the centre of its initial population and the other “villas” gave origin to the different parishes. In 1689 a document (Portuário das Terras de Portugal) make references to eight of the first “aldeyas” of Paranhos, namely, Regado, Agueto, Couto, Igreja, Lamas, Tronco, Carvalhido and Vale. In 1837, more precisely at the 27th of September, Paranhos started to belong to Porto city. Until today this parish is increasing but maintains the initial rural characteristics like small shops where affability is dominant. You can walk to the House of Music (Casa da Música) that was built for Porto 2001 (capital of culture) where various concerts of different kinds of music take place. It is located at Rotunda da Boavista Garden. You can also go to the garden Arca d’Água in Praça 9 de Abril. The garden has this name because in there you can find the old water reservoirs for Paranhos. These reservoirs were until the end of the XIX century the mainly supply of water to a lot of fountains spread all over Porto. Nearby the apartment you can find public transports including the Porto subway (closer stops Carolina Michaelis and Casa da Música) that can bring you from the airport or take you to the centre, to some beaches or even to the casino at Póvoa do Varzim. To go to the city centre like Ribeira you can walk (45 min) or take the subway – 5 minutes till the station Av dos Aliados and then 10 minutes walking. After Ribeira, if you cross the bridge S. Luis, you will be at one of the Porto's caves tasting some of the best brands. If you take the bus to Foz, in 10 minutes you will be by the see, relaxing in a terrace. The subway can also take you to Póvoa de Varzim, where there is a big beach and also one of the most famous casinos. If you prefer to go to Espinho, to the beach or the casino, you will take the train at the rich (azulejos) station of S. Bento. Come and enjoy! You can check the location in the following map:
