Apartment in Lisbon 44 - Alfama (managed by TravelingToLisbon)

Apartment 44 is a wonderful flat located on the 3rd floor of a building (the same a number 37 and 71; no elevator!) from the 18th century, at Alfama one of the oldest parts of Lisbon.

It is full of sunlight that you can enjoy from its terraces, wile having a glance of the river, or seing the cats sleeping on the roofs of the medieval neighborhood.

The apartment is a short walking distance from the other picturesque neighbourhoods of Baixa and Chiado. Nearby you have all kinds of traditional commerce, high standard shops (at Chiado) and access to the train to the beaches around Cascais (Cais do Sodré).

The apartment has 65 m2 and It has been recently renovated to include the following:

• one bedrooms with double bed (140 cm wide);
• a living room with a double sofa bed with satellite Tv and Hi-Fi and access to the terrace. The living room communicates with the kitchen through a window;
• a complete kitchen with electric oven and stove, microwave, fridge with freezer compartment and a washing machine; it also has a table with place for 4 persons;
• a complete bathroom with hydro-massage bathtub;

In wintertime the apartment is heated with electric heaters.

UMTS internet connection with USB plug can be provided upon request (10,00€/day).

We will welcome you with a bottle of cold “vinho verde”.
You will also find in the apartment various CDs of typical Portuguese music to complete your cultural experience in Lisbon.

There are several other apartments in Alfama, the medieval Moorish neighborhood where an emerging cosmopolitanism mixes with the “natives” day-to-day life. It is a village in the heart of the city, due to the fact that most of Alfama’s residents have lived here their entire lives and retain a strong sense of community.

Alfama was first settled by the Romans and Visigoths and was an important Jewish neighborhood in the 15th century, but it was the Moors who gave the district its atmosphere and name (al hamma means springs, a reference to the hot springs used as baths until the 17th century). It is crowned by São Jorge castle, which was built by the Visigoths in the 5th century and enlarged by the Moors in the 9th century.

Be surprised by Alfama's narrow cobblestone alleyways, stairs and squares, built on a rock-hill that was responsible for its survival after the big 1755 earthquake that destroyed most of the medieval city. A walk through this old-fashioned residential neighborhood is now a step back in time.

It is an ideal place to explore hidden places, stunning views over the city, the river Tejo, restaurants, fado houses, or even to dance and eat sardines during the popular June festivals. Here you can find numerous little grocery shops, taverns and small restaurants - most having no more than 3 tables. At the edge of the Alfama, Lisbon's renowned flea market, the Feira da Ladra, is held in the Campo de Santa Clara every Tuesday and Saturday.

Contrasting with these timeless images is a trendy modern development by the waterfront across from Santa Apolónia train station which houses stylish design shops, restaurants and bars, like the famous "Lux". 

You are also very close to the Fado and Portuguese guitar Museum: Situated at Largo do Chafariz de Dentro. It is a place where you can have a historical visit through the most the traditional Portuguese music-Fado- and famous Portuguese fado singers like Amalia Rodrigues, Carlos do Carmo and Mariza. During the summer  thursdays, Fridays  and Saturdays) you can dinner in a small square of the museum and listen to Fado,  live! A night program you certainly won’t miss!

Another astonishing building next dor to the apartment is Casa dos Bicos (House of Facets). It was built in 1523 at the time of king Manuel I and is faced with diamond-shaped stones, probalby influenced by the Italian renaissance.

If you decide to go further up, passing Alfama you will find an astonishing view of the city from Miradouro da Graça or from the one where is the church of St. Maria do Monte da Graça. You will also be able to visit a Spanish barroque style monastery S. Vicente de Fora (mark of the Spanish domination of Portugal until 1640).

From this apartment you can explore the rest of the city walking to the castle (S. Jorge) or to Baixa, Bairro Alto, Chiado or Santa Clara.

We have enjoyed Lisbon a lot! The small streets and the views were great. Also the apartment was very good. Specially the balcony was our favourite place to sit with a glass of wine and listen to the sounds of the Alfama people.
It was nice to discover Lisbon, its shops, its terraces and all the nice streets. Taxis are cheap so it is an easy way to see a lot in a short period.
We hope to come back to Lisbon and to see this wonderfull apartment again!

A lovely and comfortable apartment in a very interesting area of Lisbon, this is the best basic for a good stay in Lisbon. We´ve liked the atmosphere in this quarter, walking up and down all the little streets. We´ve used a lot the public transports (carris) and could explore in this maner a good part of the town . Excelent food (seafood). Instead of make a cruise on the Tejo it´s better to get a 1day ticket for train and bus and make a trip to Sintra, Cabo da Roca + Cascais.
We have had a good time here and we can recommend the apartment and the organisation, TravellingToLisbon, the welcome from Filipe helped us to a good stay.
It was good to have the little heaters!

As you already know Alfama is a lovely place to stroll and explore. We enjoyed simply looking at the churches and architectural details - and tile varieties.
Up the street we enjoyed sausage pastries from a tiny place on the night that stayed open until 8pm or so.
Further up, on the left is a bakery with delicious rolls.
If you need to call a taxi consider using Fado Museum as the drop off/pick up.

Lovely apartment, in a very good location! My advice would be to take a map with you wherever you go because we got lost a lot!!!
Without one, Lisboa is a very hard place to navigate around.
Luckily everyone was friendly enough.
Taxis are really cheap and easy to find.

We very much enjoyed being part at the Alfama neighborhood-life.
It´s a real pity that we could not understand the lively discussions of the Portuguese women in the street.
The 60 stairs up to the apartment are really worth it, due to the fantastic view and the cozy atmosphere.

Overall we had a hugely enjoyable stay in Lisbon and the apartment and its excellent location in the narrow cobbled streets of Alfama, close to Castelo, a range of little shops in R. dos Remedios, at the bottom of the Rua da Regueira including an excellent butcher and the nearby 28 Tram, were major contributors to the success of our stay. 
It is only a short walk of 15 minutes into the centre of the city and, using the Museu do Fado as the reference point for taxis, it is very convenient for transport to and from the airport.  The TravelingToLisbon website is the best online accommodation booking site I have used, and I have used many, and the descriptions and wonderfully clear pictures of the properties are key to this.  You deserve a pat on the back for providing a really good service.
