Apartment in Lisbon 1 - Baixa (managed by TravelingToLisbon)

Apartment number 1 is located on the 3rd floor (no elevator!) of a typical XIX century building constructed against a XV century fortress wall in the Pena district.

Nearby you have all kinds of traditional commerce, and it is a walking distance from Lisbon's historical centre and some of the best sea food restaurants in the city. It is also a short walking distance to the subway and train stations going to the beaches around Cascais.

There are two public car parks 3 minutes walking.

It has an abundance of natural light, and from the window you have an amazing direct view of the castle and its beautiful surrounding.

It is 80m2 and has been completely renovated and remodelled to include:

• one bedroom with double bed;
• one bedroom with 2 bunk beds;
• one living room with a sofa bed, satellite TV, DvD player and a hi-fi stereo;
• a dining room;
• a kitchen complete with washing machine, gas oven and stove, microwave and fridge with frozen compartment;
• a bathroom with a small bathtub;
• two terraces, one built within on the old fortress wall, and another with a beautiful view over Lisbon's roofs where you can sit and relax;

Wireless broadband access available for those who have their own laptop with Wi-Fi compatible equipment.

All rooms have air-conditioning.

We will welcome you with a bottle of cold “vinho verde”.
You will also find some CDs with Portuguese music to complete your cultural experience.

Apartments 1, 2, 55 and 203 are at the same building at Calçada Nova do Colégio, which is a charming narrow street in the district of Pena. There are several other apartments at Baixa.

The main feature of Pena is that it is a plateau, from which two main slopes descend, facing Martin Moniz and Avenida da Liberdade. It begins at the north-east of Rossio and extends to Campo dos Mártires da Pátria, commonly known by Campo de Santana. The streets on the two slopes are twisting and irregular, leading to many beautiful alleys and side streets.

Being one of the oldest districts in Lisbon, one is overwhelmed by the diversity of its buildings, constructed in accordance with the successive types of architecture through centuries. Wrought iron balconies from the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries can be seen everywhere. In constant dialogue with the wrought iron are the glazed tiles of the façades - a style reportedly brought from Brazil after the 16th century.

Pena is a quiet neighbourhood where one can find the Italian and German embassies, the birthplace of Amália Rodrigues and the place where Luis de Camões is supposed to have lived his last days (Calçada de Santana, nº 139)

It is very close to the famous Bairro Alto, a nightlife area, which can be reached after walking down Rossio or by taking the Elevador do Lavra, the oldest funicular in Lisbon. This 120 year old elevator goes every 15 minutes down to Rua das Portas de Santo Antão, the location of many excellent fish restaurants as recommended by many city guides (see KLM Lisbon city guide).

The apartment was very good and it was exactly as the photographs on the website showed.  When we first arrived I was a bit concerned about the neighbourhood as you have to walk up a hill which has lots of graffiti and boarded up buildings. It was perfectly safe though and we walked up and down there at all hours of the day and night. The location is very central.
The apartment was cleaned twice during a two week stay. I thought this was excellent service.

Ich muss schön sagen: die Strassen sind sehr steil, daran musten wir uns schon gewönen und mit den Autos kann man auch nicht durch aber wir hatten trotzdem einen entspanten Urlaub in Portugal. Am zweiten Tag als wir angekommen sind wir mit den alten Strassenbahnen gefahren. Wir wahren auch jeden Tag am Strand!
Einmal wurde ich sogar von einem seeigel gestochen.

The apartment was very nice, charming, and comfortably cool despite the small "heatwave" during our stay - and we didn't have to use to A/C! The stairs was a bit of a challenge, but good exercise. Lisbon is a fantastic city and the only thing we regret is not making a longer stay. One week is the minimum.

It has been an absolute pleasure staying here.
I must admit, the stairs were a challenge at times but helped work off the excess calories gained because of the fab food lisbon has to offer.
The apartment is confortable, light and spacious - very good value for money!!!

Lisbon has so much to offer and its an exciting city to explore by foot. Breakfast at an outdoor cafe in Baixa-Chiado is a must and dancing the night away in one of many clubs in Bairro Alto finishes the day off on a plus.
If you're looking for a contempory, vibey Portuguese restaurant with a fusion flavour then Sacramento on Sacramento Street is brilliant.
The service is exceptional and the food world class. Great atmosphere and the bar has everything and anything to get the party started.

All in all, this is an amazing city and we've throughly enjoy our stay. The apartment is perfect and a little gem.

We enjoyed our stay very much at apartment #1 from 10/2/07 to 13/2/07.

Very clean, comfortable, and peaceful, with very helpful management. Nice views. Grocery store and many cafes for excellent local fare sprinkled around the twisting cobblestone streets. Minutes away walking from the main squares in the city.
The kitchen and bathrooms were clean and adequately stocked with no shortage of hot water.
I would highly recommend this apartment for people physicaly fit, as there are lots of steep hills and stairs to climb on the way back to the apartment.
The apartment definitely met the standards of the description and photos. If anything, it's nicer in person!

We really enjoyed staying in this clean and modern apartment with our family of 3 children.
It was very well located next to the metro and downtown with the little grocery store around the corner.
Great to have proper air conditioning (not just ceiling fans), a washing machine and a lovely view and balcony.
We also enjoyed the friendly welcome and helpful advice. It was a bit tricky to find and had 3 flights of steep stairs but once you're there it's fine.
We had a great time in Lisbon and would recommend this apartment to other families or individuals.
