Apartment in Lisbon 11 - Bairro Alto (managed by TravelingToLisbon)

This unique apartment has been exquisitely restored to retain all its old world charm.  It’s located in a neighborhood that is both trendy and traditionally Portuguese.  It's steps away from the energy and fun of Bairro Alto where the visitor will find restaurants of all price levels together with an eclectic mix of shops and locales going from fashionable clothing designers, to hip bars, to music from fado to electronica, and, even, old fashioned grocery stores. 

The apartment has kept its Portuguese version of “Art Nouveau” feel with some of its fresco style wall paintings intact and its colorful decorated ceilings.   Original tiles and a stone and copper hooded chimney have been preserved in a bright cheery apartment boasting seven windows on the second floor (no elevator) of a just renovated historic building. 

In minutes one can walk to the Chiado Metro station, or, to two of the three funicular elevators in Lisbon,  “Gloria” and “Bica"  as well as to a stop on  the famous  No. 28 tram line.  Cais do Sodre’ and the morning Ribeira fish, fruit and vegetable market, the largest in Lisbon, lie a short walk away.  Walk easily to other destinations within the historic center of Lisbon.  While the neighborhood is closed to through vehicular traffic, taxis are readily available on the main road just 150 meters down the hill.

Heat in the wintertime is supplied by electric heaters.  

We will welcome you with a bottle of cold “vinho verde”. You will also find in the apartment various CDs with typical Portuguese music to complete your cultural experience in Lisbon.

Apartment 11,  is located at Rua Da Atalaia in Bairro Alto (BA).  There are several other apartments at Bairro Alto.

BA dates back to the 16th century and is characterised by its small workshops and restaurants. By day, it is a quiet sleepy area (recently pedestrianised); by night the area becomes alive and is a popular place to dine and drink away the early hours (please bear in mind that this is not the choice if you need to sleep early and are looking for a quiet area).

There are three public car parks within 3 minutes walking distance.

The apartment is a short walking distance from the other picturesque neighbourhoods of Baixa, Chiado, and Alfama, where you can find the historic Castle (S. Jorge).  It is also walking distance to the subway (the closest is Baixa-Chiado) and train stations (Cais do Sodré) that can take you to the beautiful beaches around Cascais.

A 5 minute walk takes you to Rossio, in Baixa, and to the Elevador da Gloria (Time Table), arriving in  Avenida da Liberdade. In the other direction, by the river Tagus (Rio Tejo), you can find Praça do Comércio, centre of the old Portuguese empire. It is close to shops, restaurants, cafés, banks, cash machines, public transport (inc subway Baixa/Chiado station and electric trams) 24 hour taxi stands, etc.

The nearest airport is Lisbon International Airport at 12 kilometres ; the nearest railway station is International Station of Santa Apolónia at 1 kilometre.

Beautiful apartment, great location, the smaller room is a bit noisy, so I recommend to stay in the larger room if you are only using one of the rooms.

It was simply fantastic. We loved the apartment and loved the ease with which we dealt with TravelingtoLisbon.
Maybe noisy if you looking for quiet time but we were certainly not. The days are really peaceful though but watch out for the creatures of the night.
