Description

Apartment 98 is a charming flat located on the ground floor of a renewed building in a narrow picturesque small square at Alfama, the Medieval part of Lisbon.

The apartment is a short walking distance from the other picturesque neighbourhoods of Baixa and Castle. Nearby you have all kinds of traditional commerce, bars and restaurants and access to the train to the beaches around Cascais (Cais do Sodré).

There is a parking place at 5 minutes walking from the apartment at Largo das Portas do Sol.

The apartment has 39 m2 and has been recently renovated to include the following:

  • a room with double bed (140 cm wide) with Tv, DVD player and Hi-Fi;
  • a kitchenette with electric oven and stove, microwave, fridge with freezer, washing and drying machine;
  • a bathroom with shower.

UMTS internet connection with USB plug can be provided upon request (10,00€/day).

In wintertime it is heated with electric heaters.

We will welcome you with a bottle of cold “vinho verde”.
You will also find in the apartment various CDs of typical Portuguese music to complete your cultural experience in Lisbon.

Location

The apartment is located in Alfama, in the same building as number 99 the medieval Moorish neighborhood where an emerging cosmopolitanism mixes with the “natives” day-to-day life. It is a village in the heart of the city, due to the fact that most of Alfama’s residents have lived here their entire lives and retain a strong sense of community.

Alfama was first settled by the Romans and Visigoths and was an important Jewish neighbourhood in the 15th century, but it was the Moors who gave the district its atmosphere and name (al hamma means springs, a reference to the hot springs used as baths until the 17th century). It is crowned by São Jorge castle, which was built by the Visigoths in the 5th century and enlarged by the Moors in the 9th century.

Be surprised by Alfama's narrow cobblestone alleyways, stairs and squares, built on a rock-hill that was responsible for its survival after the big 1755 earthquake that destroyed most of the medieval city. A walk through this old-fashioned residential neighbourhood is now a step back in time.
It is an ideal place to explore hidden places, stunning views over the city, the river Tejo, restaurants, fado houses, or even to dance and eat sardines during the popular June festivals. Here you can find numerous little grocery shops, taverns and small restaurants - most having no more than 3 tables. At the edge of the Alfama, Lisbon's renowned flea market, the Feira da Ladra, is held in the Campo de Santa Clara every Tuesday and Saturday.

Contrasting with these timeless images is a trendy modern development by the waterfront across from Santa Apolónia train station which houses stylish design shops, restaurants and bars. From here you can explore the rest of the city walking to the castle (S. Jorge) or to Baixa, Bairro Alto, Chiado or Santa Clara.

If you decide to go up instead of going down, you will find an astonishing view of the city from Miradouro da Graça or from the one where is the church of St. Maria do Monte da Graça. You will also be able to visit a Spanish barroque style monastery S. Vicente de Fora (mark of the Spanish domination of Portugal until 1640).

Came and see for yourself!

There are several other apartments at Alfama.

The apartment could have more places to hang or put clothes for a long stay, but for four days it was fine.

Ideally located, in the alfama,  lovely and charming place, the best to stay in lisbon in my opinion.

The kitchen is perfect, fully equiped if you want to cook.

There is no window, so the place is quite humid, but it's perfectly fine if you open the door to get some air.

The apartment was great for our needs, and very cosy to come home to.
It's in a great area to get the feeling for the real Lisbon.
One issue was the pillows were very flat and there were no spares, might be worth having some in a cupboard.
Thanks! We really enjoyed Lisboa!

Just a tip for going back to the airport: walk down to St. Apolónia station (luggage room if necessary) and take a taxi to the airport, less than €10.
