Apartment in Lisbon 47 - Castelo (managed by TravelingToLisbon)

Apartment number 47 is located on the second floor of a building (the same as number 123) on the street Rua da Costa do Castelo (street of the castle) that is near Baixa and Alfama.
Nearby you have various forms of traditional Portuguese commerce, and from there you can easily reach most of the popular sightseeing spots in Lisbon.

From its windows you will enjoy one of the most amazing views over Lisbon and the river Tejo.

This colourful apartment has 90m2 and has been tastefully renovated in a sophisticated way to include:

• a bedroom with double bed (140 cm wide);
• a living room with TV and hifi stereo and dinning area; 
• an office with a single bed;
• a kitchen with all you need including electric oven and stove, fridge with freezer, microwave, washing and dry machine;
• a bathroom with shower

The apartment has central heating.

There is also high speed cable internet connection.

We will welcome you with a bottle of cold “vinho verde”.
You will also find in the apartment various CDs with typical Portuguese music to complete your cultural experience in Lisbon.

Apartment 47 is  located at the Castle S. Jorge district as others, next door.  S. Jorge is located in the highest hill of the historic centre of the city and is one of the main historic and tourist sites of the city. Apartments 47 and 123 are in the same building.

The first fortification was built in the 2nd century BC by the Romans and grew over the time. It was renovated in the 10th century by the Moors; it was conquered by the first king of Portugal D. Afonso de Henriques and was submitted to big renovation again in 1300, when Lisbon became the capital of the Kingdom.

Between 1373 and 1375, King Ferdinand I ordered the building of a new city wall around Lisbon. This new city wall, which partially replaced the old Moorish walls,  was designed to encircle previously unprotected parts of the city. It had 77 towers and a perimeter of 5400 metres, and was built in only two years. There are still some remnants left (for example agains the walls of apartments 1 and 2). The castle is now a big tourist attraction, especially for the wonderful views (vista do Castelo de S. Jorge) of Lisbon that it offers.

This location has easy access to Baixa, the Castle (S Jorge) district and also to Alfama and to Santa Clara, where Lisbon's flee-market (Feira da Ladra) takes place.
It is also close to some of the stops of the famous tram number 28. This is a scenic route crossing most of the tourist neighbourhoods of the city centre. A definite must for any visitor to Lisbon.

After the great earthquake of 1755, when the center of Lisbon was destroyed, a new center was constructed, made of grid pattern “geometrical” streets. This area, situated between Praça do Comércio, Rossio and Praça da Figueira is called Baixa.
From Baixa you can easily access the nigh life district Bairro Alto and the smart Chiado, with all his theatres, museums, elegant and traditional shops, bars and restaurants.

To the other direction, going up street, you will accede Graça and Santa Clara the place where Feira da Ladra (Thief's market ), the flea market, happens every Tuesdays and Saturdays. Here there are also several “musts” not to miss on your visit:

• Panteão Nacional – Church of Santa Engrácia: When the construction began in 1682, it was planned as one of the Lisbon’s biggest churches. However, it had been long neglected and the construction was completed only in 1966! It was then that the Panteão Nacional was inaugurated. Here you will find cenotaphs of Portugal's heroes. The interior is colossal and contains the tombs of historic and literary figures - from Vasco da Gama to Amália Rodrigues, the famous fado singer.
• The convent of São Vicente de Fora: Portugal’s first king, Afonso Henriques laid the foundations of this church in order to fulfil a vow to construct Christian Houses of worship where Portuguese and European crusaders would lay to rest. Inaugurated in 1629, the church was severely damaged by the 1755 earthquake. It has been recently renovated and deserves a visit. The view from the rooftop is one of the greatest in Lisbon.
• Some "Miradouros" (vantage points) miradors with amazing views over the castle S Jorge, the river Tejo and the city roofs. (miradors of Graça with an open-air café and Senhora do Monte 600m further on). The views are even more spectacular at sunset.

We liked the apartment a lot but the stairs up to the street from the city were something else! Thank God for cabs at the end of long days of walking and sightseeing.

There were a few missing things in the apartment that were taken care of when we let you know about our needs. Loved having a washer/dryer for the 10 days we were there...

Apartment 47 was the first apartment we have stayed in Europe. It lived up to the expectations we had gained from the Traveling to Lisbon website. In five days we have at least understood the labyrinth that is the Alfama.
Highlights of our trip included the Tower of Belém, a concert by Anne Sophie von Olter at the Gulbenkian Centre, the Museu of Arts and Antique, and wonderful meals.
The apartment was tastefully decorated and met our needs.
We particularly apprecciated the wifi that allowed us to use our iphone to find about timetables, places to see, and also to keep in touch with friends at home.
Apartment 47 is a great place to call home, even if only for a few days.

We all had a wonderful holiday in Lisbon. The views from the apartment are mesmerizing and it had everything we needed.
I just wanted to say that we really enjoyed staying in our apartment and loved being in Lisbon. The apartment was really well equipped and it made such a difference having a good quality cot and high chair for our son.
Our 19th month old son spent hours watching the planes go by. We had lots of fun exploring the city and are much fitter than when we arrived.

Without previous experience with TravelingToLisbon there was some concern about what the apartment would be like but we are pleased to say that it was comfortable, clean and in a convenient location as described on the web.
Being near the castle meant tourists were nearby during the day but it was very peaceful at night, with an absolutely fantastic view over the city.
Piped music around the house as well!
We phoned on arrival and the representative met us at the apartment as agreed.
There was no problem with the taxi, collected from the departures area – just make sure they use the meter, but we had no issues with the transportation.
Would we go back with the same company? – Yes, they were first class.

I can only add to the comments already made from the previous guest. The apartment was superb. The view is definitely breath taking. While we are not young in age, we are young in mind & heart and found this city a wonderful delight. We met many friendly people at shops and bars. The walk, always an adventure filled with many joyous experiences.
The small narrow passage ways reminded us a lot of our trip to Venice, Italy which we enjoyed. I can say that we leave sadly but take with us many happy memories...
I hope other who come, will take advantage of the trolleys and buses to explore this city and surrounding suburbs. For those coming and staying here, take trollye #12 from town square to get you close to this apartment, a little exploring will be required to find the exact location to get off, but it's not hard to figure it out, once you get around.
