Apartment in Lisbon 14 - Bica/Bairro Alto (managed by the owner)

Apartment 14 is located on the 3rd floor (no elevator!) of an old historic building in the funicular/tram of Bica at the border of Bairro Alto district.

The apartment is a short walking distance from the other picturesque neighbourhoods of Baixa, Chiado and Alfama, where you can find the historic Castle (S. Jorge).

Nearby you have all kinds of traditional commerce, high standard shops (at Chiado) and access to the train to the beaches around Cascais.

The apartment is 35m2 and has been renovated to include the following:

• one bedroom with double bed (140cm):
• a living room (TV and stereo) with a small veranda overlooking the funicular and the river;
• a complete kitchen with washing machine;
• a small bathroom with shower.

Apartment 14 is located in one of the oldest neighbourhoods of Lisbon, where you will most certainly experience the traditional Portuguese way of life.  There are several other apartments at Bairro Alto.

It is at the border of Bairro Alto inside the way were the funicular Bica passes.

Lisbon’s steeply sloping terrain has always been a serious problem for the transport of people and goods between the high and the low-lying areas. During the 19th century, in some areas, the company of transports in Lisbon used trams on rails pulled by animals. On the 28th June 1890 a new system was opened to the public at de street of Duarte Belo, copying the one already in use at Calçada do Lavra and Calçada da Glória. The initial traction system was by rack and cable, with water as the counter-weight and it started using electricity around 1912. The actual carriages where not changed since the thirties.

All the three funiculars in Lisbon, Calçada do Lavra, Glória and Bica were declared to be national monuments in February 2002.

Bairro Alto dates back to the 16th century and is characterised by its small workshops and restaurants. By day, it is a quiet sleepy area (recently pedestrianised); by night the area comes alive and is a popular place to dine and drink away the early hours. In Bica you can find the Bica funicular that connects Bairro Alto with Cais do Sodré (where you can catch the train that can take you to the beautiful beaches around Cascais).

It is close to shops, restaurants, cafés, banks, cash machines, public transport ( inc subway station  Baixa/Chiado 50 metres away and electric trams) and 24 hour taxi stands, etc.

A wonderful experience of living right in the heart of the city!

The nearest airport is Lisbon International Airport at 12 kilometres; the nearest railway station is International Station of Santa Apolónia at 1 kilometre.

From the front entrance to the view, either up to Bairro Alto or down across the rooftops to the river and bridge, we were in love with this apartment.
The area is local and charming and only a hop away from the busier Bairro Alto and Baixa/Chiado.
A comfortable apartment with great light in the morning and sunsets to die for. Everything one needs even if the bathroom is on the really small side.
Daniel was a great host and calling the cab to take us back to the airport was a nice touch. Thanking you very much and hoping to visit and stay on the Bica again.

We loved the stay in the charming apartment in Barrio Alto, which had a personal touch with nice old furniture, a big soft sofa, fully equipped kitchen for cooking and making expresso and TV and DVD which we used as stereo - all luxury! We enjoyed the view from the almost 14 metres balcony to the water, bridge and not least to the neighbourhood, where the Bica elevador and the local people where creating a wonderful atmosphere in the narrow streets below. In the evenings there's a lot of bars opening on the street and crowded with young people and the citycentre is a walking distance away. We were received by Daniel who was very friendly and helping! We would love to come back!!

This is an ideal apartment for the independent minded traveller. It is spacious and bright with a wonderful view down to the Tagus over the rooftops of the surrounding neighbourhood.
It is central but also quiet, well within walking distance to many of Lisbon's lively neighbourhoods and tourist attractions.
We would stay here again.

We stayed recently in Daniel's apartment in Rua da Bica. The apartment is small (the bathroom even too small) but it has great sights and an amazing natural light entering from the balcony... Maybe another calefactor would be ok in winter.
The street is the one of the Bica elevator so it is near from everything: 5 minutes walking to Barrio Alto shops, Garrett theaters and terraces, Cais do Sodré...
And Daniel, the landlord, is really useful: he speaks French and English (and a good one, indeed).
Thanks for the call to that taxi, it arrived at 10:30 punctually!

We loved Daniel's apartment and appreciated his warm welcome and helpful advice about Lisbon. The balcony view was superb and location very convenient for all we wanted to see. The Bica was so special and we really felt at home in such a comfortable apartment. We would love to return one day.

Appart super sympa. pour deux, idéal. beaucoup de charme. emplacement privilégié. quelques soucis avec le chauffeau, mais... fait son petit charme. Situation excellente pour visiter Lisboa. Sur la ligne du fameux tram 28. Daniel très sympathique, disponible et extrêmement serviable. Bref, un vrai bonheur. Merci infiniment. N'hésitez pas... (par contre, c'est vrai qu'un petit lecteur de CD serait le bienvenu... pour écouter du fado en buvant un petit verre de vinho verde).

We really liked the charming location of the flat, the Elevador da Bica of course, but also the easy access to the Metro and the night life in Bairro Alto. Nice view but balcony too narrow to really use. The flat is cosy, but some of the furniture is a bit dated and worn. There is no CD-player in the flat, and no Vinho Verde or fruit awaited as promised. The landlord was very helpful and flexible.

We had the best time ever in Daniel's apartment. It was a great chance to be so well located, at walking distance of many of Lisbon's lively neighborhoods. We loved the apartment; cute, cosy, full of light with a fantastic view from the balcony. It felt like home.
We were also warmly welcomed with local explanations on where to go or what to see. A great alternative to staying in a hotel - we would definitely come back!

The apartment is very well located with a great view in a very charming district close to Bairro Alto. It has a cosy sleeping room, small living room and entrance hall, a quite well equipped kitchen and a really petite bathroom. It's cosy and the landlord is very helpful and friendly and speaks an excellent French and English.

The apartment is wonderful, small but very cosy, with an excellent atmosphere and lots of light coming from the big windows (there's also a view of the river). The street is typically Lisbon, in a very interesting area, close to everything but quiet at the same time, a little apart from the big mess of the Bairro Alto. We felt really at home and would recommend this apartment to everybody who deserve it!

We had a really great stay at the apartment (#14). It's in a cracking location and really well kitted out. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to be close to all the main attractions and nightlife. Excellent views too and not too far to the market (at the bottom of the hill - you can get the Bica funicular back up) either.
We'll be staying again.
